Festivals Miskolc and around

There are sights and programmes for every single day of the year. Fans of fine arts, music, acting all find a sight or program to their taste. Big programmes can be found not only in summer time because a good festival may make autumn or winter more cheerful. There is a wide range of activities to choose from castle festivals to dances, old-timer cars to folk dance festivals, Miskolc expects its guests all year round.

The National Theatre of Miskolc is the first stone theatre in Hungary, where actors and actresses performed in Hungarian. Several theatrical and music festivals take place here every year. The nearly 200-year-old theatre has the biggest and most theatrical areas in Central-Europe. The Museum of the History of Acting, Actresses and Actors shows the theatre history of the 19th and 20th centuries in chronological order.

We can follow the history of acting from the first barn-stormers till the actors and actresses of today. The Csodamalom Puppet Theatre offers not only puppet shows for children, but also representative and interactive programmes for anyone. The Symphony Orchestra of Miskolc has an important part in the music life of the city. Its concert hall as well as several cinemas and exhibition halls can be found in the House of Arts (Művészetek Háza).

Miskolc is a several-century-old merchant city where we can find old and today’s gourmet food and drink. Merchants have always liked lacipecsenye (barbecue), pretzel from Miskolc, and aspic, which even has a legend. Several gastronomic festivals are held in the city such as the Kocsonya Farsang (Aspic Carnival) at the end of every winter and the Avasi Borangolás (Wine Tour in Avas) in May, where visitors can witness the revival of the wine cellars in Avas.
